What are the skills in basketball you should work on to continue getting better?

What is success for any basketballer? It might be representing your country, your state, your region or your club. Ultimately, it is doing your best to reach your maximum potential.

In Victoria, we are blessed with a wonderful infrastructure for our sport. We have state of the art gyms, world class coaches, historic clubs and legendary players. There is a focus on the next generation of ‘ballers,’ with businesses like Chase that are designed to develop individual athletes and help them excel at the level they are playing.

But what should you work on to get better at basketball? What is the best formula for any young player trying to maximise their ability?

The essence of player development is the coaching and learning of the fundamentals of basketball.

Every player has different natural advantages and abilities. Some might be tall and strong, others fast and nimble. You might have been playing from a very young age, while your teammate might be new to the game. No two athletes are the same.

What is common to success in basketball is the need for all players, young or old, female or male, gifted or not gifted, to become fundamentally good at all aspects of the game. Development of the basics is the one thing that all players should consistently work on.

The Fundamentals

Basic fundamentals of basketball include:

      • Passing

      • Ball handling/dribbling

      • Shooting – interior, mid, free-throw and three.

      • Rebounding

      • Defensive movement and technique

      • Footwork

      • Hand eye coordination

      • Conditioning and endurance

      • Communication and teamwork

    It’s Simple

Basketball in essence is a simple game (ball goes in hoop), although you can break down each aspect forever. This means no one skill is ever truly mastered. Basketball’s greatest players are those who spend their time relentlessly training these core fundamentals.

Repetition of these skills, with progression in complexity, means that when you need to perform on the court, they will come naturally. You will be able to focus on the game while your body takes care of the rest.
